I started creative work in the studio extremely late this semester. I spent the first month trying to find my way on unknown paths, going in all directions. I was constantly exploring, researching and brainstorming ideas, seeking inspiration and insight in every conversation, from every image, and every line I read. Nothing helped. I was stuck and very frustrated. Then one day last week the profound realization came to me that along with the desire to “try” a new practice in a new medium I was abandoning 20 years of medium and technique mastery and throwing out a “bag” of visual language that I had worked so hard to create, which is absolutely foolish! In addition, the work I have already created isn’t “done.” There is so much more I can and should try to take it further.. This week is the first time this semester I have sat down with my late work to consider it as a starting point. Already so many intriguing ideas have come to me. I am excited to see what the work will look like with these ideas implemented.

There isn’t much time to experiment or execute many works. It is possible to create five small works where I plan to explore working on new substrates, using new mediums, methods of art making, incorporating color back into the work, and perhaps explore the use of collage using fabric or paper.

I have already created two of the five pieces. The first work is a silk screen print. I just learned the process and wanted to see what my work would look like using this new process. I plan to create one other print for the exhibition.

The second work is an attempt to work with a semi-transparent fabric rather than on canvas as I traditionally work on. In addition, I have used acrylic instead of oil to paint with.

The two additional works will explore the use of color or collage. If these experiments are somewhat successful, I will submit them into the show. If they aren’t visually pleasing, I plan to make additional works that continue to explore what I have already begun by making additional works using the fabric substrate and acrylic medium.
